Raspberry buns

On Saturday mornings, if all goes well, we often have raspberry jam buns for morning tea.  At least, they’re meant to have raspberry jam in them.  The last couple of weeks there has been no jam.  I am having words with the bakery.  Ahem.  Anyway.  They are a lovely treat, all soft white bread and sticky pink icing (and if you’re lucky, jam inside).

Babess loves them.  The first time she tried one I was a little dubious.  I don’t like giving sweet things to small children, and the smaller they are, the less sweet stuff they get.  But the more children I have, the more relaxed my rules get!  I was also a little apprehensive of the mess potential.  Well, I thought, the worst that can happen is that she gets pink icing everywhere.  The next worst is that she licks all the icing off and leaves the bun, like Fainjin does.  What actually happened was, she enthusiastically demolished the whole thing.  Certainly, she was very sticky afterwards, but there was less mess than I feared.

Today, she saw them sitting on the bench waiting, and was very insistent that she needed her morning tea right now.  “What do you say?” I asked.  “Peeeese” she almost-snarled, her eyes and brain clearly filled with the anticipation of sticky pink goodness.  I laughed and settled her into the highchair with her bun, which was attacked with her usual ferocity.

“Pink bun!  Pink bun!” her brother chanted.  “What do you say?” I asked.  “Peese Mama narling”, he’s such a ham.  “Are you going to eat all of it?” I asked.  “No,” – nothing if not honest!

Ah well, what can you do?  He called me Mama-darling!  I gave him half of one (yes, the half with the icing on it, I’m not that cruel).  He licked the icing off.  Then he gave the rest to his baby sister.  She couldn’t believe her good fortune.

Later in life, she might not be so amenable to disposing of his pre-licked cast-offs.

Haha. Don’t worry, I once interviewed a nutritionist said it was fine for kids to have sticky buns for morning tea (as long as they are not TOO jammy or icing-y), because they use so much energy and it’s got loads of good stuff in there too. They will burn off the calories (unlike their Mum)
