Fainjin and I stayed home today, nursing our colds. While he ate his lunch, I mixed up a batch of muffins. A bit of extra baking at this time of year never goes amiss.
When he’d finished his crackers-with-butter-and-vegemite, he came over to watch me fill the mini-muffin cases. It was a bit intricate, as I was spooning in a little batter, then some cream cheese, then more batter, and topping each with a raspberry. He dragged over his step-stool to get a better view and watched for a little bit, commenting on how many spoons I was using and what I was doing.
As I finished the first tray, he threw his arms in the air and exclaimed, “Good work, Mama!”
The enthusiasm was quieter, but just as evident, when he got to eat them.

That’s adorable.
PS: I’ve never had vegemite?

Hi Jess! Vegemite is a yeast-extract spread, the Australian/NZ version of British Marmite. It’s black and salty and you spread it very thin. It seems to be something you grow up with and love, or you just never get to like it. I have given some to US friends to try, and although most of them didn’t hate it, none of them would buy it to have on their toast in the mornings! But if you want to try, look for UK Marmite in your local supermarket – in the US it can sometimes be found with the stocks and gravy mixes (it does make a good darkener/flavour enhancer for gravy).
