We visited an old friend of mine today, one we haven’t seen in a long time.  But this is one of those treasured friendships where it doesn’t matter how long it is since we’ve seen each other, we just pick up where we left off, and everything is very easy.
His kids are older than mine, but his younger son eagerly took Fainjin off to play with his Lego, and his daughter disappeared with Pearl to pore over horse and pony magazines and discuss which books they’ve been reading.
Meanwhile, we sat around and chatted and relaxed while watching the older kids play electronic games and my friend and Babess take turns charming each other.
At no point did I worry what chaos my kids might be creating or what they might be getting into that they shouldn’t.  Even Babess was perfectly ok to just wander around the place.
What is it that creates such a haven?  The children were not suddenly more trustworthy (they’re always pretty good), and the house itself was probably no different to many others we have visited.  I think it is the host’s family attitude, the feeling that it would be impossible to give offense, be too much trouble, or wear out our welcome.  He was perfectly relaxed having small children wandering around his house, and therefore so were we.  Not many people can be so accommodating, even when they are trying hard to be, and even if they have small children of their own.
To those that can – thank you.  From the bottom of my heart.
