Essential element

Fainjin has been on a prescribed iron supplement for about 4 weeks now, and he’s a changed man.  Where he was listless and lethargic, he’s now full of energy.  Where he was taciturn and sullen, he’s now bright and chatty.  Where he was pale and dull-eyed, he’s now rosy-cheeked and sparkly.  Where he refused to eat anything other than pasta & cheese or breakfast cereal… well, miracles have to stop somewhere, right?

He’s sleeping better too, I think because he’s getting properly tired – he’s much more active during the day.  When we pick him up from daycare, he comes running to us, shows us what he’s been doing, and tells us about his day.  In the car on the way home, he laughs with Babess and they sing songs or tell stories together.  Before we knew his iron was low, we just thought he was tired after long days at daycare.  He would slump tiredly in his carseat, half-dozing off on the way home.

He’s usually pretty perky right up until just after dinner, and then he crashes out.  At bedtime, he’s asleep within seconds.  He knows for himself when it’s coming, too.  Last night as I got him ready for his shower, he wailed, “I neeeeed to go to beeeeed!”  Needless to say, I made sure it was a quick shower.

That is fantastic. I know personally how much of a difference it makes when you are low on iron, it feels like moving through jelly to get anything done.
