Before spelling was invented

Since we started the Latin lessons, Pearl has become very interested in history, which is great!  She’s been reading about ancient Rome and telling me about it, and thinking about other periods of history too.

Today, while we were walking home from her “craft camp” holiday programme, somehow in the course of conversation she asked me, “Mummy, when did people invent writing?”

I stuttered for a while, as snippets of fairly useless information on the Sumerians and Linear B and such whirled through my head, sadly without dates attached.  “Ummm, a really really long time ago”, I told her lamely.

“Oh.”  There was a longish pause.  “And when did they invent reading?”

ROFL That is just the sort of conversation I would have with Annie. Thank goodness for the ‘Word Spy’ book that answers these sort of tricky questions.
