Simple tastes

Pearl had surgery today.  She’s fine, it’s a relatively common procedure which was scheduled a while ago, and it all went very well indeed.

We had to be at the hospital early, which was good because she wasn’t allowed to eat or drink anything, and she was hu-ungry.  She didn’t make a fuss about it, but told me a few times her tummy was grumbling.

As she came out of the general anaesthetic – it was all over by 9:30am – she had three complaints (bear in mind she was still 99% asleep): “I’m all wobbly!”, “I want something to eat”, and “I want to go hoooome”.  As soon as she was back in her room (her own room!  with a Dora bedspread! and a TV! and her own bathroom!), the nurse brought around the traditional post-surgery breakfast of jelly and ice-cream.  She took so long to eat the jelly that the ice-cream had melted before she got to it, but she decided she didn’t feel like ice-cream anyway.

A bit later, when she was more properly awake, she was encouraged to eat something more.  The nurse said she could have anything she wanted.  Pearl hesitated, then said, “Well, um, could I have some bread and butter?” She’s never been one for anything but butter in her sandwiches.  Fancy bread-and-butter sandwiches, garnished with parsley and a strawberry (in July?!), duly arrived and were nibbled at.

Then we all came home, Pearl and her teddy-bear still wearing their hospital bracelets, and she settled on the couch for the afternoon.  She asked for bacon and scrambled eggs for lunch – a very good sign of recovery!

Many many thanks to the nurses, doctors, aides, kitchen staff, cleaners, and reception staff who make this sort of hospital stay comfortable, reassuring, and fuss-free.  You do a great job.

I’m glad it went smoothly. Good staff at the hospital can make a world of difference in such situations.

Glad Pearl’s operation went well! Yes I agree, nurses do a fantastic job, some of them ever compassionate and so cheerful despite how tiring a job like theirs must be.

I hope she’s doing really well!

She’s a bit pale and shaky this morning, but otherwise fine. We’ll just take it quietly for a while. Thanks!
