Going to school

Pearl has recently started walking to school by herself some mornings.  She loves the independence of it.  My heart sits in my mouth each time, until I remind myself how cautious she is, how good at crossing roads.  There are two, neither of them very busy, and she is very sensible.  We have practised, Pearl choosing when it’s safe to cross for both of us.  She will wait until there are no cars in sight from any direction, checking several times.  The other day she told me that while she was waiting she spotted a neighbour walking her son to school, so Pearl just waited until they caught up with her and crossed with them.  I praised her good sense.

She took off this morning full of smiles – it’s still a treat for her to go all by herself – and Fainjin announced that he was five, he was going to school, and took off after her!

We caught him and brought him back, of course, and were soon in the car heading for daycare.  He was very disappointed, insisting that he was five and needed to go to school.

“Before you go to school, you need to know your name and address,” I told him.  “What’s your name?”

“Fainjin!”

“Fainjin who?”

“Fainjin UpsideBackwards!”

“Very good.  Now, Fainjin, where do you live?”

“At the fire station!”

Wishful thinking…
