Making up songs

This afternoon, the children were sitting around the table making up song lyrics.  Pearl started with the traditional (?) words, “Inky pinky ponky, Daddy bought a donkey, donkey died, Daddy cried, inky pinky ponky.”  The other two quickly picked up on them and, in trying to copy, came up with their own variations.  There was great hilarity.  Realising they weren’t getting the words “right”, all three children started getting more and more creative.

Babess beckoned me over.  “Mummy, I’m going to sing a song, just for you!”

“OK sweetheart, go ahead.”

“Inky pinky donkey,

Daddy bought a cup [hahahaha!]

Cup broke,

Daddy… ummmmm cup died,

Daddy cried,

Inky pinky donkey!”

She grinned triumphantly, and the other two laughed until tears ran down their cheeks.

Hooray for inky pinky ponky! I have only ever heard that one from my mum and her sisters!

Strange how these things get passed on, isn’t it? I remember it from my own childhood, but it’s not one I’ve taught the kids. I think Pearl picked it up at school, and is now teaching her siblings… 🙂
