In Fainjin’s classroom they have a “letter of the week” and a “word of the week”, which are up on posters on the wall. He told me very seriously that they have been studying the letter L, and talking about lions and ladybirds. He even brought home a picture of a ladybird to colour in, because he hadn’t had enough time to finish it at school. He sat down on Friday afternoon and finished it completely under his own steam (neither his teacher nor I were particularly bothered whether he did it or not, but he wanted to). The finished product has gone into his book bag to go back to school on Monday.
The word of the week was “I”. Fainjin is used to pointing out all the “the”s on a page as we read a story, but tonight I paused and said, “Can you see the word that was your word of the week?” and he went straight to it and said “I”.
He takes school very seriously, and enjoys it too – long may it last!
