It was easier when every question was “why?”

Today’s difficult question from Fainjin, as we were walking to the supermarket:

“Mum, is the sky higher than it looks?”

I’m still thinking about that one… any suggestions, please let me know!

I like these sorts of questions.
My first reply would probably be “how high do you think it looks”. But that’s not going to move the conversation forward very far or very fast, even if it gets him thinking. I think a better answer would be to take him outside at night. During the day it’s easy to think the sky is only as high as the birds or the clouds, depending on your weather. But at night… you’ve already said he likes astronomy, so it’s not as if he doesn’t have enough basic knowledge to push his own reasoning on a bit more. Is the sky as high as the moon? The planets? The stars?
